The Green Man
by Margaret Twomey
While my friends and I were at the Westport Fair, and finished the corn maze, we saw a trail in the woods. We decided to go on it. After around 5 minutes of following the trail we saw a lovely creek. We also noticed how beautiful the leaves were. They were green and yellow above the creek and it was really pleasing… until we heard an eerie noise.
We started feeling uneasy and decided to turn back but we forgot which way we came from! My friend Ella insisted we go left, so we did. While we were walking we got bored so we decided to tell stories. All of the stories were funny until Sophia went. She decided to tell the story of The Green Man. It’s not scary, but kinda creepy because we are in the middle of the woods. The story says that The Green Man comes every fall to take all the green out of the leaves which make them brown, yellow, red, and orange. We all said it was probably fake, but every time we said more about it we heard a chilling noise. We felt the path becoming wider and thought we were back at the fair, but weren’t.
We were in a graveyard! All of the leaves were fallen and the ground looked orange from them, but all of us freaked out. It was horrific! All of a sudden, we heard a lot of alarming noises from the woods. The noises got gradually louder until… The Green Man popped out of the woods! We all screamed and hid but The Green Man stood there. I thought he might be nice so I went out to see him. It turns out he is super nice! I told him how we were lost and he offered to show us the way back. Once I got all of my friends to stop hiding we took off. On the way the Green Man told us about how much he loves the color green. He said the color green helped him feel recharged. He takes the green out of the leaves in the fall because the leaves would fall down and be put to no use if he doesn’t get the green from them.
We finally got back to the fair just in time so that our parents didn’t notice that we were gone. We thanked the Green Man and then said bye. He said bye to us and then said see them next year.
